Caitlyn MacKelvey recently received a puppy that she's named Ruskin.
Caitlyn MacKelvey is a graduate student at Gannon's Ruskin campus. Her family recently gifted her a puppy, which she's named Ruskin. We asked Caitlyn to tell us a little about her choice in name and have shared her answer below.
"Many people often wonder how I came up with the name Ruskin for my dog. I respond with that’s where I am attending graduate school in Florida. However, the name Ruskin holds more meaning to me rather than what is on the surface. Gannon University in Ruskin, FL was one of the various schools I was considering when working towards my doctorate degree in occupational therapy. Growing up in Erie, PA I originally thought Florida was too far away from home, including the lifestyle I had learned to love and the place where I felt comfort in the arms of my family & friends. However, after visiting campus, I was surprised my mind was set on attending graduate school in Ruskin, FL. The faculty, university, and sunshine welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like one big family. Much like thinking I would never leave my hometown, I also thought asking for a puppy for Christmas and actually receiving it would never happen. I was surprised on May 8th, 2020 when I received my little Ruskin. I chose the name Ruskin because it holds so much meaning to me. Not only is Ruskin the town where I’ll be earning my doctorate degree, but also where I realized I had a second home. I found myself making new friends, achieving new goals, working new jobs, and exploring new areas in and around the community. Ruskin is a town that is full of sunshine day-in and day-out. From the warm sunny weather, to the kind-hearted community—much like the town— Ruskin, my puppy, is full of sunshine and smiles—always bringing joy and happiness to those around him. Therefore, Ruskin means more than just a town, it’s my new home and now my pup can be apart of it."
