Capping an impressive trip to the conference meet, Gannon junior Joey Deemer (Connoquenessing, Pa./Butler Area) was named the PSAC Champion Scholar for the second consecutive year Saturday at the 2020 PSAC Swimming Championships.

The PSAC Champion Scholar Awards are modeled after the NCAA's Elite 90 award and honor the student-athlete with the top grade point average who is competing at the site of each of the PSAC's 23 team championship finals.

Deemer reached the finals in all four individual events he swam at the championships, finishing seventh in the 1650-yard freestyle Saturday evening, ninth in the 100 free, 10th in the 500 free and 11th in the 200 free. That came after a thrilling end to Day 1 on Wednesday that saw him take part in the winning 800 freestyle relay team that broke the Gannon program record, finishing in 6:46.17.

In total, 16 different Gannon student-athletes have won the award 22 times since the award was initiated for the 2011-12 academic year.
