Using Technology to Connect the Iron Triangle of Healthcare
Gannon University's Biomedical, Industrial and System Engineering Department along with its graduate and undergraduate Health Care Management Program's collaborated to provide Erie regional health care leaders and students with an opportunity to learn about the value that technology offers in achieving the "Iron Triangle objectives of improving quality, improving access, and reducing the cost of healthcare.
The presentation by Gannon University Biomedical, Industrial and System Engineering Department faculty members gave a high level overview of the importance of the bits, bio, and bosons of medical technology relative to how they apply to modern health care studies and technology that has moved from a focus the animal studies of the late 20th century; to the virtual simulations of the 1980's-2000's; to the classic and haptic simulations of this decade.
Major topics of discussion and demonstration included virtual reality, robotic surgery, locomat rehabilitation, implant fabrication, workforce engineering innovation, machine learning, and tele-robotics. The need to reeducate and retrain the existing workforce to assure maximum utilization of these tools and the value of recruiting a new workforce that can use to tools to further elevate the diagnosis, care, and treatment of patients was discussed.
