A Message from Gannon's Justice, Equity Diversity and Inclusion Committee
Standing with our Asian, Asian-American and Pacific Islander Communities, Gannon University Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
Dear Gannon Community,
As we are working our way together toward improved awareness and understanding of each other and the differences in how we experience life and express ourselves, we like to remind you that all students and employees on our Erie and Ruskin campuses are invited to our Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Student Forum at 5 p.m. tomorrow, March 23. The JEDI Committee is building momentum, bringing forward plans and gathering ideas for how we can all inspire change in our community and world.
Many in our community and across our country are struggling and suffering through mistreatment and injustice. The members of our Asian, Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities have experienced increased racism, discrimination, and harassment over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic and now most recently with the shootings in Atlanta, where the majority of the victims are Asian.
We are deeply saddened by the lives lost in these shootings, and even more so by the continued disturbing acts of hate and violence against the AAPI community. These events have heightened our focus on the racial injustices facing those within this community.
To our brothers and sisters of the AAPI community, we are here for you and we stand in solidarity with you. Together, we must find a way to end racism and violence against any race.
As a leader in higher education, Gannon community members are called to act on our responsibility to create change here at home and, for the lives of those who are impacted by these injustices, to foster a culture of unity.
Gannon University has directed sharper attention to these matters, and we are seeing good progress on our campuses with open dialogue; small group and university programming; the formation of the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee; and more.
We must continue to come together in these ways to put our University Mission to action and to deepen our commitment to an educational experience that emphasizes both inclusiveness and social responsibility.
This recent tragedy is a reminder that our work is vital; but, it is just the beginning of a longer journey to overcome more deep-rooted challenges we face as a community, nation and world. Let us be reminded that we are on that journey together.
To all members of the AAPI and Gannon communities, we are praying for your peace and well-being.
A REMINDER OF OUR RESOURCES
We would like to remind you of the resources that Gannon has in place for the members of our community who may be experiencing increased vulnerability, emotion, stress or anxiety as a result of these acts. We are here for you, and these resources are readily available to support and guide you.
