GANNON WOMEN'S LACROSSE RANKED
EIGHTH IN NATIONAL PRESEASON POLL

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women’s lacrosse team is ranked eighth in Lacrosse magazine’s annual NCAA Division II preseason rankings.

2007 NCAA Division II runner-up West Chester is the magazine’s top pick. The Rams finished 19-2 last season, falling to C.W. Post 15-7 in the national title game.

C.W. Post is ranked second after completing last year’s perfect 17-0 season with a national championship. The Pioneers advanced to a NCAA Division II record sixth consecutive Final Four.

Stonehill (Mass.), Adelphi (N.Y.), and Lock Haven complete the top five. Stonehill and Lock Haven both played in the 2007 Final Four, but were eliminated in the national semifinals.

Limestone (S.C.), Pfeiffer (N.C.), Gannon, Queens (N.C.), and Philadelphia round out the top 10.

Gannon returns 12 letterwinners and seven players who reached double digits in starting assignments from last year’s 12-4 squad. The Lady Knights will have to replace their top two leading scorers in Joanna Culkin (23 goals, 45 assists, 68 points) and Shannon Pagano (34-25-59). The program has never recorded a losing season in its 12-year history and has posted three consecutive 10-win seasons.

Krista Schunk (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Taryn Millerd (Shortsville, N.Y./Midlakes) headline the offensive unit. Schunk ranked 17th among NCAA Division II players in 2007 with 3.06 goals per match. She recorded 49 goals, seven assists, and 56 points. Millerd tallied 33 goals, 15 assists, and 48 points.

Acacia Cook (Clay, N.Y./Clay-NS) returns in goal after finishing fourth among NCAA Division II goalkeepers last season in save percentage (.539) and goals against average (7.73).

Lacrosse magazine is the flagship publication of US Lacrosse, a 200,000-member, non-profit organization that serves as the sport’s national governing body. The magazine, the first feature publication devoted to lacrosse, celebrates its 31st year of production in 2008.
