GANNON WOMEN'S LACROSSE JUMPS
ONE SPOT IN NATIONAL RANKINGS

LADY KNIGHTS OPEN SEASON SATURDAY IN NORTH CAROLINA

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women’s lacrosse team jumped one spot and is ranked seventh in the latest Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II Top 10 poll released Wednesday afternoon.

C.W. Post (1-0), the reigning national champion, remained No. 1 for the second consecutive week. The Pioneers took eight of the 10 first-place votes and earned 97 points. 2007 NCAA Division II runner-up West Chester (0-0) is tabbed second with the final two first-place votes and 88 points.

Adelphi (N.Y.) (0-0), Limestone (S.C.) (2-1), and Stonehill (Mass.) (0-0) complete the top five. Lock Haven (0-0), Gannon (0-0), Belmont Abbey (2-1), and Queens (N.C.) (3-0) accounted for six through nine. Pfeiffer (N.C.) (1-2) and Mercyhurst (3-0) were tied for 10th.

Gannon returns 12 letterwinners and seven players who reached double digits in starting assignments from last year’s 12-4 squad. The Lady Knights will have to replace their top two leading scorers in Joanna Culkin (23 goals, 45 assists, 68 points) and Shannon Pagano (34-25-59). The program has never recorded a losing season in its 12-year history and has posted three consecutive 10-win seasons.

Krista Schunk (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Taryn Millerd (Shortsville, N.Y./Midlakes) headline the offensive unit. Schunk ranked 17th among NCAA Division II players in 2007 with 3.06 goals per match. She recorded 49 goals, seven assists, and 56 points. Millerd tallied 33 goals, 15 assists, and 48 points.

Acacia Cook (Clay, N.Y./Clay-NS) returns in goal after finishing fourth among NCAA Division II goalkeepers last season in save percentage (.539) and goals against average (7.73).

Gannon opens the 2008 season Saturday, March 1 against Rollins (Fla.) at St. Andrews Presbyterian (N.C.) College. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m
