ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women’s lacrosse team produced the best team grade-point average in the country during the 2006-07 academic year, it was announced by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA).

Gannon’s 19-member squad combined to post a 3.35 team grade-point average during the 2006-07 academic year. The Lady Knights had a 3.37 team GPA during the fall semester and a 3.33 team GPA during the spring semester.

St. Thomas Aquinas (3.34), C.W. Post (3.237), Molloy (3.22), and West Chester (3.202) had the top five team grade-point averages in the country among NCAA Division II programs. In all, 13 Division II programs had marks of 3.0 or better.

Individually, three Lady Knights were named to the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll. Joanna Culkin (Clifton Park, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), Joanne Heintz (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder), and Shannon Pagano (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) were three of 66 Division II student-athletes from 24 different institutions to be named to the honor roll. Only juniors and seniors were eligible for the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll.

Culkin, who also landed a spot on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II second team in May, had a 3.81 cumulative GPA. The psychology major captured her third career all-region award and second career all-america honor this season. The senior attacker led Gannon in assists (45) and points (68). She ranked fourth among NCAA Division II players in assists per match (2.81) and 21st in points per match (4.25). Her eight assists against Seton Hill on April 11 was the highest single-match total in Division II this season.

Heintz, a Finance major with a 3.80 cumulative GPA, made her second consecutive all-region appearance this season while being named All-American for the first time. Considered one of the best defenders in the country, Heintz was Gannon’s defensive leader. The senior led the nation in ground balls per match (3.94).
