GANNON BLASTS QUEENS IN BATTLE
OF NATIONALLY-RANKED TEAMS

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women’s lacrosse team scored 10 of the last 11 goals and blasted Queens (N.C.) 20-8 in a match-up of nationally-ranked teams Friday night at a cold Gannon University Field. Gannon entered the match ranked sixth in NCAA Division II while Queens was tabbed eighth.

Gannon looked to be blowing the match wide open early on, scoring the first seven goals of the match. Taryn Millerd (Shortsville, N.Y./Midlakes) and Mary Eshenour (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) scored two goals each during the 7-0 blitz in the first 18:06.

Queens rallied with three of the final five goals before halftime and went to the break trailing 9-3. The Royals then cut the deficit to 10-7 with four of the first five scores in the second half. Kelley Duffy’s third goal of the match with 19:31 remaining capped the rally.

However, Millerd silenced the rally with her third goal of the evening at the 18:45 mark. It started a 5-0 run in which five different players scored. Queen momentarily stop the bleeding with a goal at the 9:25 mark, but the Lady Knights iced the victory with the contest’s final five goals.

Eshenour led the Gannon offense with seven goals. Colleen Dixon (Lafayette, N.Y./Lafayette) recorded four goals and two assists. Millerd posted three scores while Antonia Cianfrocco (Chittenango, N.Y./Chittenango) and Sarah Belen (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) added two goals each.

Kayla Nelson (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) and Christina Blasi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-LaSalle) completed the scoring with one goal apiece. Nelson dished out a team-high four assists.

Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) started the match in goal, making four saves while allowing seven goals in 40:29. Acacia Cook (Clay, N.Y./Clay-NS) turned away three shots and allowed one goal in 19:31 of relief action.

Gannon improved to 4-1 with Friday’s victory. Queens dropped to 5-2. The Lady Knights return to action Monday, March 24 against Division I Niagara at Gannon University Field. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
