GANNON RALLIES TO STUN RIVAL
MERCYHURST IN TOP-10 SHOWDOWN

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women’s lacrosse team out-scored rival Mercyhurst 10-3 in the second half and extended its winning streak against the Lakers to five matches Friday night with a stunning, come-from-behind 13-11 victory before a large crowd at Gannon University Field. Gannon entered the match ranked eighth in NCAA Division II while Mercyhurst was tabbed seventh,

The match was originally delayed 20 minutes due to lightning and was played through off-and-on rain showers. The weather and delay didn’t seem to bother Mercyhurst. The Lakers out-shot Gannon 22-10 in the first half en route to an 8-3 halftime lead.

Taryn Millerd (Shortsville, N.Y./Midlakes) netted the contest’s first score 2:43 into the action, but the visitors quickly took control with six consecutive goals. The two teams then traded goals in the final 11 minutes to account for the 8-3 halftime score.

Gannon looked like a completely different team after the break. The Lady Knights held Mercyhurst without a goal for the first 10 minutes of the second half while scoring four times and cutting the deficit to 8-7.

Mercyhurst momentarily stemmed the tide with a goal at the 19:50 mark, but Gannon maintained its pressure with four more scores to assume an 11-9 lead. Christina Blasi’s (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-LaSalle) goal gave the Lady Knights their first lead since 1-0 with 11:12 remaining in regulation.

All-American candidate Breanna Haggerty then rallied Mercyhurst with consecutive goals to tie the match at 11 with 6:47 to play, setting up the dramatic finish.

Sarah Belen (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton), one of three seniors playing in the last match of their collegiate career, scored her only goal of the evening with 4:49 to play, putting the Lady Knights back in front. Millerd added an insurance goal with 3:38 remaining to ice the 13-11 victory.

Blasi, Millerd, and Colleen Dixon (Lafayette, N.Y./Lafayette) led the Gannon attack with three goals each. Antonia Cianfrocco (Chittenango, N.Y./Chittenango) found the back of the net twice. Belen and Mary Eshenour (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) completed the scoring with one goal each.

Kayla Nelson (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) ran the offense with five assists. Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) recorded seven saves in goal.

Gannon completed its season at 11-4 while winning its fifth consecutive match against Mercyhurst. The Lady Knights are 10-2 all-time against the Lakers. Mercyhurst saw its NCAA hopes dashed as it finished the season with a 12-3 mark.
