GANNON MEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS
TO SIXTH IN REGIONAL RANKINGS

GOLDEN KNIGHTS FALL TWO SPOTS WITHOUT LOSING A GAME

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon men’s basketball team might go into the post-season with a chip on its shoulder. Despite going 2-0 last week, the Golden Knights fell two spots and are ranked sixth in the latest NCAA Division II Great Lakes regional rankings released Wednesday afternoon. Gannon even fell below Kentucky Wesleyan, who suffered a home loss last week.

The regional rankings are important due to the fact that they represent how teams qualify for the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) post-season champions receive automatic bids. The top six remaining teams in the regional rankings receive at-large bids to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.

Regional rankings will be released every Wednesday afternoon through the rest of the season. The NCAA Division II Tournament selection show is scheduled for Sunday, March 9.

The top two spots are now held by GLIAC teams. Grand Valley State continued its season-long stay as the top-ranked team in the Great Lakes region with a 26-0 record against Division II teams and 23-0 Division II in-region record. Findlay (20-3, 19-3), Drury (Mo.) (18-3, 17-2), Northern Kentucky (16-5, 14-5), and Kentucky Wesleyan (18-5, 16-4) complete the top five.

Gannon (21-3, 21-3), Lewis (Ill.) (15-7, 15-6), St. Joseph’s (Ind.) (15-9, 14-8), Bellarmine (Ky.) (14-8, 13-8), and Wisconsin-Parkside (11-11, 11-11) round out the top 10.

Gannon, ranked 10th in NCAA Division II, completed the regular season last week with a 24-3 overall record and 15-2 GLIAC mark following a 68-55 victory against rival Mercyhurst. The Golden Knights won the GLIAC South Division title outright for the first time since 1999-00. The squad posted its highest conference winning percentage and fewest conference losses since joining the GLIAC in 1995.

Gannon has won 24 games for the first time since the 1989-90 NCAA Elite Eight team went 24-8. One more victory would give the Golden Knights 25 wins for the first time since the 1986-87 NCAA National Runner-Up team posted a 28-6 record.

Gannon opens the post-season Saturday, March 1 against Ashland in a GLIAC quarterfinal game at the Hammermill Center. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The contest can be heard live on Jet Radio 1400 and via the Internet at http://www.gannon.edu/sports/werg/knightsound.ihtml.

A limited number of reserved seats will be made available to the general public Thursday, February 28 and Friday, February 29 from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Gannon Athletic Offices, located through the 3rd and Peach Streets entrance of the Carneval Athletic Pavilion. General admission tickets are currently on sale and will be on sale in advance through Friday.

Ticket windows at the Hammermill Center open Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are scaled at $10 for reserved seating, $5 for adult general admission, and $3 for student and senior citizen general admission.
