GANNON CLAIMS GARY MILLER CLASSIC
WITH 83-67 VICTORY OVER POINT PARK
GOLDEN KNIGHTS HOLD POINT PARK 34.1 POINTS BELOW AVERAGE
ERIE, Pa. - It’s probably safe to say the Gannon men’s basketball
team can play a little defense this season. The Golden Knights held their
opponent under 70 points for the third consecutive game and captured the
24th Annual Gary Miller Classic Championship with an 83-67 victory over high-flying
Point Park Saturday evening at the Hammermill Center.
Point Park and Gannon both entered the contest with scoring averages over
100 points per game. The visiting Pioneers were averaging 101.1 points through
their first seven games this season. However, the start of Saturday’s championship
game was anything but high scoring.
The two teams slugged it out to a 14-14 tie 10 minutes into the contest.
That’s when Robert Buckner (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) took complete
control of the game. With Gannon leading 17-15 and Point Park sagging in
a zone defense, the sophomore guard hit three consecutive three-pointers
to push the Golden Knights to a 26-15 lead.
In all, Buckner scored 16 of Gannon’s final 25 points of the first half.
The Golden Knights ended the half with a 28-10 run to assume a 42-25 halftime
advantage.
The lead ballooned as large as 27 points (56-29) in the second half, but
never dipped below 14 points.
Gannon put four Golden Knights in double figures in scoring for the third
consecutive game. Buckner led the troops with 21 points, including 19 in
the first half. Vince Mosley (Boynton Beach, Fla./Dillard) netted
19 points. The senior forward was also named to the all-tournament team after
scoring 39 points in two games.
Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and Pierre Howard
(Chicago, Ill./Bloom) added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Gannon shot 48.3 percent (29-60) from the field, 50 percent (7-14) from three-point
range, and 69.2 percent (18-26) from the free throw line.
Chivas Whipple led Point Park with 19 points. Dan Muto and D’Veron Harris
chipped in 13 markers each. Whipple and Muto were named to the all-tournament
team.
Point Park shot 42.6 percent (23-54) from the floor, 33.3 percent (5-15)
from behind the arc, and 94.1 percent (16-17) from the charity stripe.
Gannon improved to 3-0 with its second consecutive Gary Miller Classic championship.
Point Park dropped to 6-2. A complete box score from Saturday’s Gannon-Point

In the consolation game, Slippery Rock shot 66.7 percent (16-24) from the
field in the second half to hold off a late charge by Roberts Wesleyan and
posted an 84-79 victory. Darnell Johnson, who completed the all-tournament
team, led the Rock with 25 points.
