GANNON'S FABULOUS 2007-08 SEASON
ENDS IN NCAA SECOND ROUND
GOLDEN KNIGHTS POST SECOND-MOST VICTORIES IN SCHOOL HISTORY
ALLENDALE, Mich. - The unbelievable 2007-08 campaign officially
came to an end for the Gannon men's basketball team Sunday evening. No. 7
Findlay shot lights out in the first half and held off a large comeback attempt
in the second half during an 88-82 victory over No. 18 Gannon in the NCAA
Division II Great Lakes Regional semifinals at Grand Valley State's Fieldhouse
Arena.
Findlay could do nothing wrong in the first 20 minutes, racing to a 56-34
halftime advantage. The Oilers shot 66.7 percent (20-30) in the first 20
minutes. They also hit 8-of-13 shots from three-point range and were perfect
in eight attempts from the free throw line.
Leading 10-8, Findlay broke open the game with a 28-9 run over the span of
7:24. Lee Roberts capped the run with a lay-up at the 8:10 mark, giving the
Oilers a commanding 38-17 lead. The region's second seed extended the lead
to 27 points at 56-29, before Gannon tallied the final five points of the
half on Joe Lindsey's (Spring Valley, N.Y./Spring Valley) lay-up and
George Johnson's (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) three-pointer at the buzzer.
Most teams would have packed it in for the season at that point, but Gannon
never gave up and showed the guts and determination during the second half
that it did all season long. Findlay bumped its lead back to 25 points 16
seconds into the half, before Gannon controlled play for the remainder of
the half.
Gannon slowly chipped away at the lead. A 9-0 run brought the Golden Knights
within 63-49 on Kyle Goldcamp's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic)
lay-up with 12:34 to play. Moments later, an 8-0 run cut the deficit to 65-57
with 10:16 remaining. The run started with five points from Lindsey and ended
with a Tyler Stoczynski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) three-pointer.
The Findlay lead hovered around the 10-point range for the next nine minutes
until Gannon posted five of the game's final six points in the last 39 seconds
to account for the final 88-82 score.
The Gannon comeback was even more impressive considering four of the five
starters fouled out of the game. Pierre Howard (Chicago, Ill./Bloom)
was the first to exit with 14:59 left in the game. Goldcamp fouled out at
the 12:06 mark, followed by Stoczynski at the 1:01 mark and Vince Mosley
(Boynton Beach, Fla./Dillard) with 31 seconds left.
Lindsey led Gannon in scoring with 16 points, along with 11 assists. Stoczynski
and Goldcamp added 15 and 14 points, respectively. Gannon shot 48.4 percent
(30-62) from the field, 37.9 percent (11-29) from three-point range, and
73.3 percent (11-15) from the free throw line.
All five Findlay starters reached double digits in scoring, led by Tyler
Evans' 20 points. Josh Bostic and Marcus Parker chipped in 15 and 13 points
each. Findlay shot 54 percent (27-50) from the floor, 45.5 percent (10-22)
from behind the arc, and 75 percent (24-32) from the charity stripe.
Gannon's unbelievable turnaround from a 9-17 record last season ended with
a 26-5 mark. It was the second-highest single-season victory total in school
history. Only the 1986-87 team that advanced to the NCAA Division II national
title game won more games with a 28-6 record.
Findlay improved to 28-4 overall and 3-1 against Gannon. The Oilers will
play Grand Valley State in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championship
Tuesday, March 18 at 7 p.m. The host Lakers slipped by Northern Kentucky
62-58 in Sunday's second semifinal contest.
