NO. 18 GANNON ADVANCES TO NCAA
TOURNEY SECOND ROUND WITH 73-56
VICTORY OVER GLVC CHAMP DRURY

GOLDEN KNIGHTS POST FIRST NCAA TOURNEY WIN SINCE 1995

ALLENDALE, Mich. - Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) posted a career-high 28 points and No. 18 Gannon shot 56 percent from the field en route to a convincing 73-56 victory over No. 11 and Grand Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) champion Drury (Mo.) Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional first round at Grand Valley State's Fieldhouse Arena. It marks Gannon's first NCAA Tournament victory since an 82-81 home victory over Bloomsburg in 1995. It was also Gannon's first NCAA Tourney victory away from the Hammermill Center since a 75-66 victory over Edinboro in the 1994 East Regional consolation game.

Gannon took control of a see-saw game midway through the first half. Trailing 10-4 five minutes into the contest, the Golden Knights went on a 13-0 run over the span of 2:43. Goldcamp scored seven of the 13 points, including the last five. His lay-up with 11:59 to play in the first half pushed Gannon's lead to 17-10.

The Peach Street kids used a 7-0 run later in the half to take a commanding 33-18 lead on Goldcamp's jumper with 5:42 showing on the clock. The Golden Knights bumped their lead to as much as 18 points (39-21), before settling for a 39-23 halftime advantage. Goldcamp had 15 points in the first 20 minutes, hitting 7-of-8 shots. After allowing Drury to score 10 points in the first 4:55, the Golden Knights held the Panthers to 13 points in the final 15:05.

Gannon slowly built its lead to 51-30 after Tyler Stoczynski's (Erie, Pa./McDowell) jumper at the 15:31 mark of the second half. Drury did use an 8-0 run midway through the final period to cut the deficit to 51-39, but Gannon answered with a three-point play from Goldcamp. The Panthers were never able to get within 13 points the rest of the way.

Goldcamp led the offensive unit with 28 points, hitting 11-of-13 shots from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. The junior center added seven rebounds, three assists, one block, and one steal. Pierre Howard (Chicago, Ill./Bloom) and Joe Lindsey (Spring Valley, N.Y./Spring Valley) added 13 and 11 points, respectively. Lindsey also dished out seven assists.

Gannon shot 55.6 percent (30-54) from the field, 30.8 percent (4-13) from three-point range, and 69.2 percent (9-13) from the free throw line. The Golden Knights have shot at least 50 percent in five consecutive games, including all three post-season contests. The squad posted a dominating 43-21 rebounding edge.

Tim Brown led Drury with 17 markers. Collins Harris, the Daktronics Great Lakes Region Player of the Year, netted 15 points, but was 4-of-15 from the field. Steven Gum, who was among the nation's top 10 in three-point field goal percentage, was only 1-of-4 from the floor.

Drury shot 33.3 percent (18-54) from the floor, 35.3 percent (6-17) from behind the arc, and 82.4 percent (14-17) from the charity stripe. The Panthers shot 26.7 percent (8-30) in the first half.

Gannon improved to 26-4, becoming only the second team in school history to record 26 victories in a season. Only the 1986-87 team, which advanced to the NCAA Division II title game and finished with a 28-6 record, won more contests in a season. Drury saw its season come to an end with a 25-6 mark.

The Golden Knights will battle No. 7 Findlay for the fourth time this season in Sunday's (March 16) first NCAA Great Lakes Regional semifinal at 5 p.m. The Oilers improved to 27-4 with a 64-57 victory over Lewis (Ill.) in Saturday's first game. Gannon defeated Findlay 66-61 at the Hammermill Center on January 10, but dropped decisions to the Oilers at Findlay on February 16 (90-61) and on a neutral floor at Grand Valley State on March 7 (95-73) in the GLIAC semifinals.
