Each year, the Center for Social Concerns compiles all of the co-curricular service information to add to the Annual Service Report. The Center relies on departments and presidents/captains/leaders/advisors of student groups to report co-curricular service to their office.
Large, one-time events will be reported by the sponsoring group: examples include GIVE Day, Day of Caring, Hunger and Homelessness Week, the Social Work Christmas Dinner, Relay for Life and Golden Harvest.
Different clubs, organizations and athletic teams have different requirements for service and it is up to those groups to determine if you can "double-dip" or count one service activity for two clubs. If you count one service activity for more than one club, please do not report it twice!
Deadlines and Incentives:
Student groups that turn in completed forms within one month of the activity will be entered to win a $50 gift card to be used for their student group. A gift card drawing will take place at the end of each semester. Service hours for this academic year are collected from June 1, 2009 - May 30, 2010.
Definitions of Service:
Co-curricular Service - refers to activities outside the classroom that are not for academic credit (i.e. activities performed with or for a club, organization, honors society, fraternity, sorority, athletic team, residence hall floor, faith-sharing group, commuter life program or other student group).
Service Learning - a skill-based service requirement for a class and will be reported by the professor to the Service Learning Office.
Community Service - typically labor volunteered off-campus to a non-profit, social service agency or occasionally to non-relatives in their homes (i.e. painting the house of an elderly person, teaching someone to read, volunteering at a children's center, etc.) or volunteering at a philanthropic event sponsored and/or organized by another group.
Advocacy, Activism, Awareness - typically labor volunteered on-campus or off-campus to petition Congress about certain soical issues, organize for change in systems or policies, or to provide education-related activities about current events (i.e. writing letters to Congress about World AIDS Day, organizing a pro-life march, protesting a war, conducting a voter registration drive, hosting a speaker or film on a critical social issue, etc.).
Philanthropy - intentionally raising money or material items for charitable contribution (i.e. special event dinners, walk-a-thons, golf outings, clothing drives, blood drives, blanket drives, etc.). Attendance at an event is not philanthropy in and of itself, but planning and fundraising hours should be counted.
Campus Service - typically labor volunteered on-campus for a specific department or event (i.e. Knights with Scholars, International Student Conversation Partners, Christmas Angel Program, Dorm Storm, Random Acts of Kindness, etc.). Campus service is not counted in the overall community service statistic, but student groups may choose to require/count this type of service performed by their members.
Individual Service - typically labor volunteered off-campus at a non-profit social service agency or in non-relatives' homes on one's own time (i.e. mission trips with your church that counted towards the honors society you are in, etc.). Please report such service only if it was performed here in Erie because you are personally interested in volunteering OR any type of service outside of this region because you were required to do so by your coach, club, or other co-curricular student group.
Below are the Service Reporting Forms. Please fill them out as soon after the service activity as possible. If you have any questions, please contact the Center for Social Concerns at fritz009@gannon.edu.
