"A writer is somebody for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people." ~Thomas Mann
"Maybe the hardest thing in writing is simply to tell the truth about things as we see them." ~John Steinbeck
The Writing Center has practice essay questions from previous Praxis exams available for students to use. Please take note that a regular session for the practice exam lasts one hour. **PLAN AHEAD and schedule an appointment for the appropriate amount of time.
When you come in to your appoinment for the practice Praxis at the Writing Center, you will be practicing specifically the essay-writing part of the test. You will pick two slips of paper out of a basket, each one with a practice question taken from earlier Praxis tests. You will select one of the two questions to respond to, and you will have thirty minutes to write your essay. Another thirty minute session with a consultant in which you can review your essay and ask questions will follow.
*Please note: Some classes require taking the practice Praxis. However, please keep in mind that you will get the best benefit from the practice exam by treating it as such rather than as a requirement that needs fulfilling.
To schedule an appointment, stop by 1010 PC and ask to schedule a time to take the practice Praxis, call us at 871-7676, or email us at writingcenter@gannon.edu

As a required test for all Education Majors, the Praxis Exam can be both challenging and intimidating. If you plan on taking the exam, give yourself a few months to prepare. Both the Writing Center and Math Center are available for practice exams, and consultants are available at both to give you some test-taking hints. Here are a couple hints that can help prepare you for taking the essay part of the exam:
Take the practice exam available to you in the Writing Center
Get a good night's sleep before the day of the exam
Have an extra pencil or pen, maybe even two extras
Take your time reading the question before moving on to write the essay
Give yourself time to brainstorm and take notes before you begin writing
Remember to leave time to review your essay for grammatical mistakes and flow
Stay relaxed! If you've prepared adequately, you shouldn't worry. The better relaxed you can be, the more easy it will be to write.
