Totem Again Wins First Place with Special Merit award
Publication wins top honors for 14th straight year

The Gannon University literary art magazine Totem was chosen for a First Place award in the American Scholastic Press Association’s annual competition for the14th consecutive year. The 2009 magazine also earned a Special Merit award, the fifth such award in its history.
The publication scored 960 out of a possible 1,000 points. Entries were judged on five categories: content coverage, organization, design, presentation, and creativity. The contest was open to yearbooks, magazines, and other publications.
Totem earned perfect scores in content coverage (400 points) and presentation (180 points). Its other scores were: creativiy, 60/70, organization, 185/200; and design, 135/150. Entries needed a minimum score of 850 to be eligible for a first-place award.
Totem competed against publications from other schools nationally with enrollments of 2,501 and up. It is produced by Gannon students and includes works of poetry, fiction, short stories, art, photography, and graphic design done by both Gannon students and faculty.
Sara Hopson and Ashley Kent served as co-editors of the publication. Berwyn Moore, associate professor of English at Gannon, served as advisor.
The American Scholastic Press Association is based in College Point, N.
Totem is Gannon’s annual student-produced literary arts magazine.
Students, faculty and staff may submit poetry, fiction, creative essays, drama, photography, and artwork to the magazine each fall.
