Welcome to the Mathematics Department

Mathematics -- There are few majors that can lay as solid a foundation for your future.  Whether your interests lie in graduate school, statistics, research, teaching, computer science, engineering, accounting, law, or one of numerous other possibilities -- a degree in mathematics from Gannon University can take you where you want to go.

We offer two degree paths culminating in a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, plus minors in mathematics and statistics.  Our curriculum includes a broad range of abstract and applied mathematics courses but also provides room to explore a secondary interest or to seek certification to teach at the secondary education level. All mathematics majors also take part in either an internship, research experience, or student teaching.

By following our Secondary Education curriculum, students majoring in Mathematics can qualify for Teacher Certification in Mathematics-Secondary Education.  These students take courses in Mathematics leading to a Bachelor of Science degree as well as courses through the School of Education leading toward certification to teach at the secondary education level.  In their Senior year, students spend a semester teaching in local area middle schools or high schools.

Mathematics majors also have opportunities for extracurricular activities including conferences and contests.  In recent years, Gannon's mathematics students have made trips to Sectional meetings of the Mathematical Association of America.  They have also competed in the annual William Lowell Putnam Competition and the Mathematical Contest in Modeling.

If you have any questions or concerns about selecting Mathematics as your major or joining our department, do not hesitate to contact me.
