Thank you for visiting the Gannon University Web site. Gannon is a highly ranked institution of higher education with dynamic faculty and more than 100 strong undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs in the sciences, health sciences, education, business and humanities. For the fourth consecutive year, Gannon is ranked overall as a top-tier Master’s university in the northern section of the United States by U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges 2008” edition; and, for the third straight year, Gannon is also ranked in the top-tier (9th) as a Best Value university in the “Great Schools, Great Prices” category. These honors are a reflection of both the quality education students receive and the financial support Gannon provides to them. Gannon’s values-centered and student-focused approach to learning empowers students to develop themselves intellectually, professionally, personally, spiritually, and socially.
As a University solidly and richly grounded in the Catholic tradition with 4,134 students, Gannon’s commitment to offering a holistic approach to teaching and learning and to serving students’ needs are constantly evident, inside and outside of the classroom. In addition to offering a variety of course offerings on our vibrant downtown campus, we also ensure that our students have the most updated facilities and resources to complement their academic programs and to help them achieve their professional and personal goals. During this Fall 2007 semester, Gannon began to offer a new Ph.D. in Organizational Learning and Leadership. This in-demand degree, the first and only program of its kind in the region, prepares professionals from many different backgrounds to manage institutions and organizations in a variety of leadership capacities.
Our Fall 2007 total enrollment is the highest in 15 years. This year we enrolled a class of 613 first-year students, 83 transfer students, and 1,405 graduate students, which is the highest number ever. Incidentally, 284 of those 1,405 graduate students are international students. Over the past three years, the diversity of our Freshman Class has also increased by 90%-- from 40 minority first-year students in the Fall of 2004 to 76 students in the Fall of 2007. The average SAT score of our freshman class is 1046, which is 29 points above the national average. The average high school grade point average of this year’s freshman class is 3.43 and includes 35 high school valedictorians. The first-year students come from 21 states and territories, and Canada. Forty-six freshmen enrolled in our challenging Honors Program this fall. The average SAT score for the new Honors Program students is 1231 and their average grade point average is 4.06. I encourage you to read more about some of the outstanding members of this year’s 2007 Freshman Class.
Here at Gannon we take pride in having all the right ingredients for a successful college career, including a 14:1 student-to-faculty ratio; retention, graduation, and employment/graduate and professional school placement rates that are significantly higher than the national averages; a full range of extra- and co-curricular activities, including more than 70 campus clubs and organizations, and challenging leadership opportunities. If you are interested in athletics, we have 18 competitive NCAA Division II athletics team and an active intramural program. Our coaches expect and demand that our student-athletes also perform well in the classroom. Because of this emphasis on academic performance, our 333 intercollegiate student-athletes collectively earned a 3.26 grade point average during the spring 2007 semester. In addition, 66 student-athletes earned a 4.0 grade point average during the 2006-2007 Academic Year and more than one-third of them were named to the Dean’s List. And, our most recent NCAA Division II graduate rate was 77%, which is 21% higher than the national average among all NCAA Division II Athletic programs.
Furthermore, Gannon continues to enhance technology across campus. The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) uses state-of-the-art technology to facilitate professional development opportunities and teaching and learning resources for our faculty, staff and students. Moreover, our students continue to benefit from the enhanced collaboration of the Math, Writing and Academic Advising Center. In the Fall of 2006, Gannon was selected as one of only four universities statewide to serve as a Center for Teaching Excellence. In addition, in 2008, the University will open the Erie Technology Incubator (ETI), which will house high-tech, start-up companies and has the potential to create new jobs and stimulate the regional economy.
As you narrow your college prospects to one institution, please consider this: approximately 32,000 successful Gannon and Villa Maria alumni reside in every state of the nation and in 48 countries. Whether they are engineers, scientists, lawyers, priests and women religious, teachers, physicians and nurses, business executives, or government professionals, they are leaders in their professions, in their churches, and in their communities. I encourage you to visit and experience first-hand the many positive attributes of Gannon University and to see for yourself why so many others believe in the unique value of a Gannon education and the many possibilities it provides.
