Whether you are interested in acquiring practical writing skills, investigating the theories of public relations and advertising, learning the history of media or discussing ethical issues confronting today’s media industry, Gannon’s journalism communications program can help you explore and investigate many career possibilities.

As a journalism communications major you will experience an interdisciplinary program designed to provide you with a thorough background in journalism for both print and electronic media. You will also experience three different practicums, where you will put classroom theory into practice in the ever evolving field of journalism. The diversity of Gannon’s program will prepare you for continued education or a successful career in areas such as:

About the Program

• The journalism communications major combines courses offered through both the English department and the theatre and communications arts department.

• Gannon journalism communications students have the opportunity to participate in organizations such as the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association, which allows them to see how their work stacks up against journalism students throughout the country.

Major Facts

    • Journalism communications students receive hands-on experience with newspaper publication through their work on The Gannon Knight student newspaper.

    • Journalism communications students can also exhibit their skills and talents working for 90.5 WERG, the University owned 3000-watt radio and streaming (www.wergfm.com) media station.

    SCHOLARSHIPS – The editor-in-chief of The Gannon Knight receives a full tuition scholarship, and scholarship opportunities are also available for members of the Knight editorial board.

    INTERNSHIPS – Gannon’s location in downtown Erie provides students with internship opportunities with media outlets including the Erie Times-News newspaper, as well as numerous radio stations, advertising agencies, local television affiliates and public relations firms.
