What You'll Be Doing

Osteopathic medicine is a distinct form of medicine practiced in the United States. Osteopathic physicians use all the tools and technology available to modern medicine with the added benefits of a philosophy and understanding that the body works as a whole. The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) teaches future physicians how each body system impacts other parts. LECOM students learn how to incorporate into medical treatments the body’s ability to heal itself, and they study a system of hands-on diagnosis and treatment known as osteopathic manipulative medicine to achieve medical outcomes.

LECOM trains medical students to emphasize helping each person achieve a high level of wellness by focusing on health education, injury prevention and disease prevention. The medical school teaches the students to become compassionate primary care physicians keeping the patient’s whole health in mind. Medical students with varied learning styles can apply to complete their medical degree following one of three learning pathways: lectures discussion, problem-based learning and independent study.

Osteopathic physicians are licensed to practice the full scope of medicine in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Because of the whole-person approach to medicine, approximately 60 percent of all osteopathic physicians choose to practice in the primary care disciplines of family practice, internal medicine and pediatrics. The remaining 40 percent go on to specialize in a wide range of practice areas from obstetrics to surgery to cardiology.

Admission Requirements

• SAT total of 1150 (out of 1600 Math and Critical Reading) or higher.
• GPA of 3.4 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
• Class rank in top 25 percent.
• Letters of recommendation.
• Personal interview at Gannon upon request.
• Evidence of scholarly potential and a desire to become an osteopathic physician.
• If the applicant has some college experience or already has a college degree in another major, some credits may be transferred in and applied to the 3+4 program.  Consult with the program director about this.  Final approval of the Dean of College of Sciences, Engineering and Health Sciences is required.

Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible due to limited spaces available. Gannon and LECOM Admissions' Committees will take approximately four weeks (total) to review applications. As students who meet the requirements are offered acceptance, they may immediately send their enrollment deposit to Gannon University Admissions to reserve their space in the program.

 

LECOM Admission Requirements

• Completion of the specified three-year undergraduate curriculum.
• GPA of 3.2 or higher in Gannon undergraduate courses.
• GPA of 3.2 or higher in all math and science courses with no grade lower than a C.
• Submission of MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) scores; must have 7 or higher in each subset with an overall score of 24 or higher.
• Completion of LECOM Secondary application.
• An Admissions interview and favorable recommendation of the LECOM Admissions Committee may be required.
• Submission of appropriate letters of recommendation and all other supporting documentation.
• You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to be eligible for the LECOM 3+4 Program.

LECOM will admit annually up to five Gannon students who meet the criteria listed above. At LECOM's discretion, more than five students may be admitted. Students will be informed of their acceptance to LECOM by June 15th of their third year at Gannon.
