Gannon University believes those who enjoy working with the complexity of numbers are crucial to personal and business success. If you are interested in becoming a public accountant, auditor or tax accountant, or if you would like to continue on to law school, Gannon’s accounting program can prepare you for your chosen career. As an accounting major, you will gain and strengthen analytical skills, an understanding of modern business needs, the ability to communicate effectively, and an awareness of ethical and social responsibility.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the average number of annual job openings for accountants will increase 10 to 20 percent by 2012. Accounting graduates can fi nd a wide variety of positions in public and private sectors, including: cost accountant, internal auditor, budget analyst, fi xed asset manager, forensic examiner, controller, revenue agent, assistant treasurer, fi nancial planner, trust offi cer and fi nancial analyst. Accounting is also the preferred undergraduate degree for those seeking careers with the FBI. Forty-eight states now allow for 150 credit hours of coursework to be licensed as a certifi ed public accountant, and many still allow licensure with a bachelor’s degree. According to the National Association of College and Employers, accounting majors receive starting salary offers averaging $40,674.

 

College Connections

The accounting program is housed in The Gannon University Dahlkemper School of Business Administration. Students in the program interact with professors and other students in the fields of advertising communications, business administration, finance, international business, management, marketing, risk management and insurance, and sports management and marketing.

The Dahlkemper School of Business Administration at Gannon has received accreditation from the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), making Gannon the first business school in northwestern Pennsylvania with both undergraduate and graduate programs that are nationally accredited.

The Small Business Development Center on Gannon’s campus provides students with a unique opportunity to work on projects and assignments for area businesses through classes and internships.

Major Facts

    • Gannon accounting graduates are regularly recruited by public accounting and industrial firms, the Naval Audit Service and other government agencies.

    • Juniors at Gannon may choose to pursue an accelerated MBA program and complete both their undergraduate and graduate degrees in just five years, rather than six.

    • Gannon’s five year BS/MBA program provides the 150 credits required to take the CPA Examination.

    • Academic and merit scholarships are available through the Business Excellence Awards.

    • Throughout students’ academic experience at Gannon, they can participate in a variety of service learning opportunities.

    • Transfer students with an associate’s degree in arts or science may be able to complete this major through Gannon’s Next–Step Program. Next–Step guarantees acceptance of up to 64 credits with grades of C or better and allows students to enter Gannon with junior level status.
