Alain Lemieux To Train Gannon Hockey Team

Posted: October 18, 2013

The Gannon club hockey team will get a chance to learn from a teacher with one of the best bloodlines in hockey.

Alain Lemieux, the older brother of former National Hockey League (NHL) great and current Pittsburgh Penguins co-owner Mario Lemieux, will conduct a training session with the Golden Knights in Erie on Oct. 22-23.

Lemieux will run two practices for the Gannon hockey team, one on Tuesday, Oct. 22 from 10:45-11:45 p.m. and the other on Wednesday, October 23 from 10 p.m.-12 a.m. at the Erie Insurance Arena. Wednesday's practice will begin after the Erie Otters game against Plymouth.

"I knew that we were embarking on a tremendous opportunity for Gannon hockey and for the University at large when I first met with coach Lemieux at his training facility," said the Rev. Jason Glover, Gannon's head coach.

"He hosted our team for a private, day-long clinic back in September, and that really solidified my team's commitment to forge a more formal, long-term association with coach Lemieux. We recognize how uniquely privileged we are to have him working with our individual players and team. We are proud to have him as a member of our coaching staff. Our program intends to fully exploit his knowledge and expertise of the game to continue to develop and advance our hockey program at Gannon," Fr. Glover said.

Lemieux played professional hockey for 18 years, including seven seasons in the NHL with the St. Louis Blues, the Quebec Nordiques and the Pittsburgh Penguins. He is currently the director of the Alain Lemieux Hockey Academy in Pittsburgh. For much of February, Lemieux will be participating and involved in the world's largest youth hockey tournament in Quebec.

The former NHL player will help coach the Gannon hockey program's 20 student-athletes and three support staff members. The Golden Knights are led by Fr. Glover and assistant coach Ed Maras.

Lemieux is expected to return to Gannon approximately once a month to help the hockey team as a coaching consultant. The Golden Knights and Lemieux are also in the process of planning an event to give back to the Erie youth hockey community, possibly hosting a day-long clinic in February. Details will be announced when they become available.

Gannon's home opener is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 26 against Case Western Reserve University at Erie Insurance Arena. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. All home games are free and open to the public. You can also follow the Gannon hockey team on Facebook.
