Gannon University’s Schuster Theater Presents “The Taming of the Shrew”

Romance, revenge and stingingly witty verbal barbs: it's not the Twitter exchange that erupted on the Video Music Awards. It's something far more timeless and funnier: "The Taming of the Shrew."

On Thursday, Shakespeare's beloved comedy of manners, good and bad, comes to Gannon University's Schuster Theatre in a production by the Cambridge American Stage Tour. The performance will be at 8 p.m., and general admission tickets are $8. Members of the company and the director will provide a free lecture/demonstration at 2 p.m. on the third floor of the Palumbo Academic Center, 824 Peach St.

The company, which was founded by Dame Judi Dench in 2000, annually brings the work of Shakespeare to the U.S. with a cast drawn from the distinguished theater program at the University of Cambridge.

The cast includes Kate Reid as Katherina, the "shrew" of the title; Julia Kass as Bianca her sister; Sarah Mercer is Baptista, their father; Toby Marlow is Petruccio, Katherina's suitor and Will Bishop plays Lucentio, who woos Bianci in the play within a play that is the dramatic conceit of Shakespeare's brilliant comedy. The production of "The Taming of the Shrew" will be directed by Kennedy Bloomer.

The company's production of "Measure for Measure" was presented at the Schuster Theatre on the Cambridge players' tour in 2013.
