Jessica Badach Hubert, assistant director of the Gannon University Center for Social Concerns, was chosen as one of the inaugural recipients of the “Pay It Forward Fund” awards.
The awards, announced by the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership, were made possible by the Charles McDaniel family of North East establishing a “Pay It Forward Fund” with the Erie Community Foundation. The fund is designed to help reduce “brain drain” in the Erie region and to encourage “acts of kindness.”
Hubert was one of only two award recipients from nearly 20 applicants. In order to be eligible, applicants had to be committed to living and working in northwest Pennsylvania and to “paying it forward” through philanthropy and service to the community.
Hubert graduated from Allegheny College with a bachelor’s degree in English. As a student at Allegheny, she completed more than 1,800 hours of community service.
The Pay It Forward Fund will make a grant to Allegheny on Hubert’s behalf to be applied to the principal on her student loans.
In her current position at Gannon University, Hubert hopes to inspire students to focus on volunteerism and helping others. In the essay she submitted as part of her application, she wrote, “I ask students and others to measure their service not just by the hours spent, but by the systemic impact of their efforts.”
