Gannon University and the Office of Campus Police and Safety are committed to providing a safe living and learning environment for its campus. Our goal is to create an environment that focuses on crime prevention and problem solving through awareness and education. By working together as a team, we create a safer and more secure living and learning environment.
Personal safety on campus as well as in your hometown is not as much about where you are as it is about your awareness and interpretation of your surroundings. It's possible to learn ways to enhance your own safety. Be aware of your surroundings, the type of activity going on and the people around you.
The Gannon Knight is the University’s student newspaper and regularly publishes details regarding criminal incidents on campus, crime prevention techniques, and other security matters. The University e-mail system is used to notify students and employees of changes in policies and general notifications. Students, parents, and employees may call 871-5555 for any emergency messages concerning weather, event cancellations, and miscellaneous information which are deemed appropriate. When emergencies arise, which may immediately affect students and staff, all means of communicating the emergency notice shall be used to notify them, including, but not limited to, e-mail, telephone, written notice, and personal contact.
Additionally, security policies and procedures are provided to every person who submits an application for admission to the University, to every new employee at the time of employment and annually to all students and employees. Crime statistics for the most recent three-year period are available upon request at the Office of Campus Police and Safety and on the Crime Statistics PDF.
The Gannon University Escort Service Team (GUEST) is designed to enhance your safety and peace of mind if you must walk after dark. The primary goals of GUEST are to enable you to travel from one location to another with a greater sense of security and to deter sexual harassment, verbal abuse, and assault. GUEST is intended to be primarily a walking service with mobile escorts available under certain circumstances. The mobile escort may be used for trips that are beyond walking range or for times when walking escorts are unavailable.
Physical Plant personnel and insurance representatives conduct inspections of all campus facilities regularly. Landscaping, outdoor lighting and grounds keeping are monitored regularly by Physical Plant, Police and Safety personnel, and Student Living Staff. Students and Staff are encouraged to report any deficiencies to their Resident Directors, the Office of Police and Safety or Campus Services.
All entrance doors to campus residence halls and University housing units are locked at all times. Keys are issued to resident students at the beginning of the academic year. If a key is lost or stolen, it must be reported immediately to the Student Living Office. Consequently, unauthorized possession of any University key is considered to be an extremely serious offense and is subject to suspension or expulsion from the University. The Office of Campus Police and Safety use security cameras located throughout the campus to monitor activity. While the specific type of hardware varies from building to building, each room is equipped with a door lock. All first floor windows have inhibitors and or latches.
Undergraduate Resident Advisors (RA's) are assigned to the residence halls. Also assigned are live in Assistant Resident Directors (ARD's) who are graduate students at the University and live in professional Resident Directors (RD's). Chaplains from Campus Ministry are also assigned to residence halls and are available to students. These staff members monitor the environment and activity within each building. Every ARD, RA, and RD undergoes an extensive training program prior to his or her assignment. The freshman residence halls also have security personnel who monitor the lobby area from 11:00 P.M. to 7:00 A.M. Security and Police Officers conduct routine patrols on Campus and in adjacent areas.
